Holiday Un-decorating Plan!
My Process for Taking Down Holiday Décor
The holiday season always brings so much joy, but there’s also something so refreshing about kicking off the New Year with a clean slate. For me, that starts with carefully and thoughtfully taking down my holiday décor. Here’s how I approach the process to make it efficient and even enjoyable!
When Do I Take Down Holiday Décor?
I remove my holiday décor after New Year’s Eve. By this point, I’m ready to transition into a new season, but my seasonal décor-loving heart still craves a little warmth and twinkle through the winter months.
What Stays and What Goes?
While I love a clean slate, I don’t want my home to feel stark during the winter. Here’s my approach:
What Goes: Anything distinctly Christmas-themed, like reds, Santas, and holiday-specific items that don’t easily translate to winter.
What Stays: Greenery, twinkle lights, and snowy elements like snowmen and snowflakes. These touches keep the space feeling warm and cozy while embracing the winter season.
My Step-by-Step Process:
Remove by Category: I start by categorizing my Christmas décor. This makes packing and organizing so much easier. Here are the categories I use:
Garland
Ornaments
Ribbon
Bows
Decorative trees
Tabletop items
Christmas trees (saved for last!)
Work Room by Room: To minimize chaos, I focus on one room at a time. Once all the holiday décor is down in a specific room, I’ll bring in the storage bins. This keeps everything organized and prevents the overwhelming feeling of having decorations scattered everywhere.
Pack Smartly: I use storage bins that are categorized by type, and I’ve fallen in love with an incredibly helpful QR code system. Each bin has a QR code that allows me to take a peek at its contents next year without opening every single bin. It’s been a game-changer for efficiency and organization!
Why I Love This Process:
There’s truly nothing better than starting the New Year with a clean slate. However, keeping a touch of seasonal décor ensures my home still feels warm and inviting during the winter months. By organizing thoughtfully and using tools like the QR code system, I can easily transition out of Christmas and look forward to decorating again next year.
